Welcome to Thespo 12

Welcome to Thespo 12

“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."
(Last line from the play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams.)

Once again, not for the first time since 1999, Thespo found itself struggling to make ends meet. Team Thespo knocked on many doors and waited in numerous swanky corporate reception lobbies. We were offered a variety of items from a cup of coffee to 4,000 packets of potato chips! But no cash.

So we took a desperate leap of faith and turned to the world at large with our FRIENDS OF THESPO initiative. We first approached ex-participants, ex-volunteers and the ever dependable theatre community with a unique proposition. We offered them part ownership of Thespo for a nominal amount in exchange for a t-shirt, magazine and 2 free tickets to one of the shows. The response was reassuring. But what was overwhelming was the outpouring of support – from strangers, from one time audience members, from musicians, from theatre practitioners in foreign lands. It has been a truly humbling and energising two weeks. We are still far from the target amount. But the clock has been re-wound and we are ready to strike Twelve!

3) Jaago Jaago Jaago - Fourth Wall (IIT Bombay)

Jaago Jaago Jaago is a street play aimed at awakening the youth and bringing to their attention how much the country needs them. Great leaders of the country like Rajiv Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and others had set examples for the youth of the coming ages to learn and follow. However, today's youth has not only forgotten our heroes and their teachings but have chosen to indulge in activities leading to neither theirs nor their country's good.

A play that just doesn’t give out rhetoric, but makes a conscious attempt to give solutions to the problem.

5) Kab Jaagega Bharat - BITS Goa

Red. White. Swish. Drums. Tears. Cheers. 'Kkab Jagega Bharat' is what Bharat is, chaotic but nuanced. This brilliant performance has been given stage time at Thespo'12 at NCPA, Mumbai. The energy and vigor of the actors comes through while highlighting one of the core problems of an Indian mind - adherence to age old dogmas and superstitions. The actors form complex formations, such as a Kali temple and a wedding scene, the highlight of which is a train representing India which slows as it picks up victims and villains from across the country ensnared in crimes inspired by nonsensical beliefs. If this street play doesn’t convince you how stupid, ridiculous and possibly dangerous superstitions are, then methinks your horoscope predicts impending doom.

Date: 18th December, 2010
Time: 06:00 pm
Venue: NCPA (Sunken Garden).
